AFS-USA's School Outreach and Educational Unit has developed a new intercultural learning lesson plan, Exploring Refugees and Asylum Seekers. The purpose of the lesson plan is, of course, to help spread awareness of refugees and asylum seekers, as the US accepts approximately 70,000 refugees each year. The lesson plan will help students increase their understanding of what it means to be a refugee in the 21st century, explore encounters of refugees in the resettlement process, and expose students to different organizations that work with refugees. The lesson plan is attached and you can feel free to share/translate/reproduce for your educator networks. Keep in mind that the target audience is US teenagers (and even younger) and, as such, it may need to be adapted for your audiences. But, it's an example of how we are working to assist educators in meeting their global education objectives, drawing from AFS' knowledge, experience, and reputation.
Another item of interest to this conversation is a program being developed jointly by AFS-USA and AFS Hungary. In the summer of 2016, AFS-USA will send students on a Global Prep (2-week) program hosted by AFS Hungary. The program will include the Syrian refugee crisis as a central theme. As we cannot predict the exact nature of what the situation will be like in Hungary at that time, we have designed the program to focus on the role of journalism in covering and presenting matters of global crisis and conflict. The Syrian migration to/through Hungary will be the primary news topic that will be addressed during the program and, in turn, we hope that participants will hear from NGO's that have provided refugee relief and relocation services as well as journalists, government staff, and ordinary citizens impacted in some way by the refugee crisis. Of course, many of the details are still being developed, but it is an example of how our actual AFS programs can play a direct role in creating an awareness of critical global issues. Likewise, these types of programs - Global Prep - with themes related to global issues, have resonated quite clearly with students here in the United States - and I suspect that it would be the same response in most of the world.

As I mentioned, this was developed for US teachers of teenaged students (and even younger) - teachers in need of quick, simple lesson plans to help them impart awareness of global issues. As such, it’s basic. But, the good thing is that it can help educators get conversations going on this important topic and engage their students in a structured manner.
It was just published yesterday, so we’re in the process of sending it out to AFS volunteers and educators. I’ll update the thread when/if we hear from teachers.
